Chenggalma Village

In all the corners of East Garo Hills, the District Horticulture Department has extended its works for the up liftmen of the poor farmers. Its extension work can be seen not only in the District Head quarter but also in the far areas like Chengalma Village which is about 110km away from the District Head Quarter, Williamnagar. This village is on the way to Tura-Paikan Road and located beside the Didram River. In this village there are 3 farmers who are benefited under the project HMNEH. Their fields are quite fertile but they don’t have the habit of growing vegetables for commercial purposes. Only few farmers grow some easily manageable vegetables like radish, mustard, and others leafy vegetables which cannot meet the market demand and they have to depend on vegetables coming from other states like Assam and West Bengal.

Many years have been passed that people from that region depends on other states products to meet their vegetable requirement until HMNEH(TM) launched in their village. As soon as this opportunity comes in their village the starts cooperating with the Horticulture Department for technical and financial supports. With the help of HMNEH now they started growing all kind of vegetables like cabbage, cauliflowers, broccoli, tomato, carrot, ladies’ finger, etc.

They have enough resources like labour, FYM, fertile soil, good market facility, etc. so they have the opportunity to carry on this activity to sustain their livelihood economically and socially as many farmers joined together as one to carry on this activities and it is easier for the extension workers to monitor many farmers when they are cooperate with other each other.

It is a good example for the farmers of other areas where farmers are struggling individually to carry out such activities and therefore success can be seen randomly and the Extension workers have to work harder to bring achievement in such areas and even sometimes it goes in vain. These farmers can be one of those who will be leading in vegetable production in the near futurewith the proper guidance of HMNEH.
