Pineapple in West Garo Hills
Shri. Jamendro B. Marak, son of Late. Sumon D. Sangma is permanent resident of village. Rongdenggre, West Garo Hills, 30 km from Tura. In the year 2007, he started cultivating pineapple about 12000 nos in 2.5 bighas and earned about ` 24,000 from his first harvesting of 20% crops (about 2500 nos of fruits) out of planted area in the year 2009. Inspired by the success, he approached and applied for assistance from HMNEH Scheme, through District Horticulture Officer, West Garo Hills. In the year 2010,he expanded the area upto 2 ha and planted about 90,000 nos of suckers and in the year 2012 he already harvested about 20,000 nos of fruits and earned about Rs. 2,00,000/- till date. He expected the harvest of 50% in the coming year which will fetch him an income of `. 4, 00,000/-. Due to his successful enterprise, other farmers` in the village are also inspired to take up pineapple cultivation and other Horticultural Crops.
