Smti. Phinorian Kharkongor of Kharnongwah Village in Mawphlang C&RD Block,is one of the famer who has taken up large scale commercial cultivation of cauliflower. Tracking back her past records, Phinorian has been a very hard and sincere farmer who took up various farming activities by growing different varieties of vegetables like cabbage, beetroot, french bean etc. to support her family especially her school going children. Inspired by the Departmental officers to take up vegetable cultivation as the area (Kharnongwah village) which is the ideal location for growing cole crops. Her desire and passion to become one of the progressive farmers of the area finally took off when she was selected the beneficiary under HMNEH Scheme in 2010-11.

Phinorian was assisted with various kinds of input support which include items like seeds, manures, plant protection chemicals etc. Encouraged by the technical advice that she received from the Departmental officers about seed production, she was also assisted with one unit of low cost poly house to raise her own local variety of cauliflower seeds.

This special effort put up by Phinorian has not only helped her to meet the shortfall of seed requirement as she intends to cover larger area , but the excess produce has enabled her to sell in the market fetching a price of about ` 10,000 per kg.

Besides the assistance that she received from the Government, Phinorian got the support from her family to extend their hands to manage this large scale cultivation. At times, when demand of work is high, the beneficiary used the hired workers from the village. On being asked about the benefit that she obtained from her Cauliflower cultivation, Phinorian expressed that the overall expenditure she has incurred from her own plus the input support, the total net income works out to around ` 1,70,000/-.

Her achievement has caught the attention the people of Kharnongwah Village to come forward and seek such kind of assistance from the Government. Today, Phinorian stands as a role model of the successful intervention of the scheme. She has become very popular in the area after the electronic media (Doordarshan Kendra Shillong) documented the entire field operations for telecast. The improvement in her income enabled Phinorian to dream big and took up the challenges to educate her children in good educational institution located in Shillong. Her passion to develop her daughter as one of the educated farmers of the state is another goal for Phinorian, as she strongly believes that her daughter would continue to expand her business in the years to come.
